Your Quick-Start Guide to Nervous System Care: Do This First

When you live with a chronic illness, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), or any condition where your energy levels feel like a flickering candle in a drafty room, the word "wellness" can feel a bit… well, heavy.

Traditional wellness advice often tells us to "push through," "grind harder," or follow rigid morning routines that require more energy than we actually have for the entire day. But as an Ablepreneur, someone building a life or a business while navigating the realities of a disability or chronic illness, those high-pressure tactics don't just fail; they often backfire.

I’ve been there. I know that feeling when your nervous system feels "fried", where every loud noise feels like a physical jolt, and your brain fog is so thick you can’t remember why you walked into the kitchen.

That’s why I want to talk to you about Soft Wellness. It’s the antidote to the hustle. It’s a gentle, realistic approach to nervous system care that prioritizes your current capacity. And if you’re looking for a place to start, this guide is for you. We aren't going to overhaul your life today. We are just going to try a few things to help your nervous system feel a little safer.

Why Your Nervous System Needs a Different Kind of Care

For many of us, our nervous systems are stuck in a state of "high alert." Whether it’s due to the trauma of a diagnosis, the constant monitoring of symptoms, or the stress of trying to run a business with a body that doesn't always cooperate, our internal "alarm system" is constantly ringing.

In FND and many chronic illnesses, the communication between the brain and the body gets a bit garbled. Think of it like a glitchy internet connection. When we try to use high-intensity regulation techniques, we sometimes just add more "noise" to an already overloaded system.

Soft Wellness is about lowering the volume. It’s about sending signals of safety to your brain in a way that is accessible for every body and mind.

1. The Foundation: The Gentle Awareness Check-In

Before we "fix" anything, we have to notice where we are. But here’s the rule: we notice with curiosity, not judgment.

I often suggest a "Gentle Reset" (like the one in my Gentle Reset Toolkit). Several times a day, just pause. You don’t even have to change your position.

Ask yourself:

  • "Where is my breath right now? Is it high in my chest or low in my belly?"
  • "Are my shoulders trying to meet my ears?"
  • "Is my jaw clenched?"

Don't force a change. Just notice. Sometimes, the act of simply witnessing our tension allows it to soften by 5 or 10%. That tiny shift is a huge win for your nervous system.

2. Sensory Shifts: Grounding Without the Effort

You might have heard of the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. It’s a classic for a reason, it pulls your brain out of a "flare-up" spiral and back into the physical world. But for many of my clients, five things is a lot of things when you’re exhausted.

Let’s try a Soft Sensory Shift instead. This is great for when you’re bedbound or having a low-energy day.

Pick one sense to focus on for 30 seconds:

  • Touch: Feel the texture of your duvet or the weight of your phone in your hand. Is it cool? Smooth? Soft?
  • Sight: Find one color in the room and look for all the different shades of it.
  • Sound: Listen for the furthest sound you can hear, maybe a car outside or a bird, and then the closest sound, like your own breathing.

By narrowing your focus to just one sense, you reduce the cognitive load while still giving your nervous system a "tether" to the present moment.

3. The "Soft Gaze" Trick: Using Your Eyes to Calm Your Brain

Did you know that your eye position is directly linked to your nervous system? When we are stressed or hyper-focused (hello, Ablepreneurs staring at screens!), our vision becomes narrow and "tunnel-like." This actually signals to our brain that there is a threat.

To flip the switch to "rest and digest," try Peripheral Vision Softening:

  1. Pick a point straight ahead and look at it gently (don’t stare hard).
  2. Without moving your eyes, start to notice what you can see out of the corners of your eyes.
  3. Expand that awareness to the ceiling and the floor.

As your vision widens, your brain receives a physical signal that it is safe to relax. It is one of the quickest ways to dial down a rising sense of panic or overwhelm.

4. The Long Exhale: Vagus Nerve Vitamin

Breathwork doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, if you have FND or air hunger, focusing too much on the inhale can sometimes make you feel more anxious.

The magic is in the exhale.

When you exhale longer than you inhale, you stimulate the vagus nerve, which is like the "brake pedal" for your stress response.

Try this:

  • Inhale softly for a count of 3.
  • Exhale slowly through pursed lips (like you’re blowing out a tiny candle) for a count of 6.

If 3 and 6 feels like too much, try 2 and 4. The ratio is what matters, not the length. This is a tool you can use during a meeting, while resting in bed, or even when you feel the early warning signs of a flare-up.

5. Micro-Pacing for the Ablepreneur

As an Ablepreneur, your business needs you, but it needs the sustainable version of you. I talk a lot about how to stop the boom-bust cycle, and nervous system care is the secret sauce.

Instead of working until you hit a wall, try "Micro-Pacing."
Every 30-45 minutes, perform one of the techniques above. It takes 60 seconds. You aren't "stopping" your work; you are "servicing" your engine. This prevents your nervous system from reaching that point of total depletion where recovery takes days instead of minutes.

Your First Step Today

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of this, remember: you don't have to do it all.

Pick one technique from this list. Just one. Try it once today. That’s it. That is Soft Wellness in action. You are building a new relationship with your body, one gentle breath at a time.

Living with fluctuating energy levels is a journey, and you don’t have to walk it alone. Whether you need a Gentle Habit Audit or just a supportive peer to help you navigate the "Ablepreneur" life, I'm here to help.

Wellness isn't a destination or a high-performance goal. It’s the quiet, kind choices we make for ourselves every day. It’s making sure that care is accessible for every body and mind.

Stay gentle with yourself.
