How to Build Habits That Actually Stick (Even on Your Lowest Energy Days)

Let’s be real for a second. We’ve all seen that "morning routine" video on social media. You know the one, the person wakes up at 5:00 AM, does a 45-minute HIIT workout, drinks a green smoothie that looks suspiciously like swamp water, and journals for an hour before most of us have even found our glasses.

If you’re living with chronic illness, a disability, or energy levels that fluctuate more than a bad Wi-Fi signal, that kind of advice doesn’t just feel out of reach, it feels like a personal insult. When you’re running a business from bed (shoutout to my fellow #Ablepreneurs) or trying to survive a flare-up, the standard "consistency is key" mantra is often the very thing that makes us want to give up entirely.

I’m here to tell you that habits don’t have to be heavy. They don’t have to be high-performance. In fact, for those of us navigating life with limited spoons, the best habits are the ones that are so gentle they almost feel like cheating.

Welcome to the world of accessible wellness strategies. Let’s talk about how to build a life that supports you, instead of one that exhausts you.

Why Traditional Advice Fails Us

The problem with most "habit-building" frameworks is that they assume you have a consistent baseline of energy. They operate on the idea that if you just "push through" the first 21 days, everything will become automatic.

But when you have a chronic condition, your "baseline" is a moving target. What was easy on Monday might be physically impossible on Tuesday. If your habit tracker is full of "X" marks on the days you were too sick to move, it stops being a tool for growth and starts being a tool for shame.

That’s why I focus on wellness coaching for chronic illness that prioritizes your current capacity. We aren’t trying to turn you into a productivity machine; we’re trying to find gentle habit building techniques that fit into your actual life, flares, brain fog, and all.

The Traffic Light System: Checking Your Capacity

Before we even think about doing a habit, we need to know how much fuel is in the tank. This is where the Traffic Light System comes in. It’s a simple way to check in with your body before you start your day.

  • Green Days: You feel relatively "good" (for you). You have some mental clarity and physical energy. This is when you can tackle your "standard" versions of habits.
  • Yellow Days: You’re feeling a bit "meh." Maybe the brain fog is rolling in, or the pain levels are creeping up. This is the time for a reduced version of your routine.
  • Red Days: These are the "from bed" days. Energy is at a premium, and survival is the priority. This is where the "Minimum Version" rule saves the day.

By labeling your day before you start, you give yourself permission to adjust your expectations. You aren't "failing" at your habits on a Red Day; you are simply switching to your Red Day Protocol.

The 'Minimum Version' Rule: The Tiny Habits That Still Count

I want you to take whatever habit you’re trying to build and shrink it. Now, shrink it again. The Minimum Version rule is about creating a version of a habit so small it’s almost impossible not to do it, even when you’re horizontal.

For example, let’s look at low energy wellness through the lens of movement:

  • The "Standard" Version (Green Day): A 15-minute gentle walk or a full restorative yoga flow.
  • The "Reduced" Version (Yellow Day): Five minutes of stretching while sitting on the sofa.
  • The "Minimum" Version (Red Day): Three intentional ankle circles and two deep breaths while lying in bed.

Guess what? The Minimum Version still counts. You did the thing. You kept the promise to yourself. You maintained the neurological pathway of that habit without draining your precious energy reserves. This is how we make wellness sustainable for every body and mind.

Self-Forgiveness: The Glue of Your Routine

This might be the most important part of any routine, especially for #Ablepreneurs who are trying to balance health with the demands of running a business.

There will be days when even the "Minimum Version" is too much. There will be weeks when the "Traffic Light" stays stuck on Red. In the traditional wellness world, this is where people "fall off the wagon."

In my world, there is no wagon. There is just you, doing your best with the body you have today.

Self-forgiveness isn't just a nice sentiment; it’s a functional part of accessible wellness strategies. If you spend your limited energy beating yourself up for what you didn't do, you have even less energy to do the things that might actually help you feel better.

When you miss a day, the goal isn't to "make up for it" tomorrow. It's to simply say, "My body needed something else yesterday," and start again with a "Minimum Version" when you're ready.

The Gentle Reset Toolkit

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by where to start, I’ve put together a Gentle Reset Toolkit. This is designed to take the guesswork out of habit building when you’re low on spoons.

The toolkit focuses on:

  1. Physical Comforts: Habits that soothe the nervous system.
  2. Low-Energy Wins: Tiny tasks that give you a sense of accomplishment without the burnout.
  3. Mindful Resets: Quick ways to clear the mental fog.
  4. Pacing Tips: Learning how to work with your energy, not against it.

You can find more of these gentle thoughts and resources on our website. It’s all about creating a supportive environment where your health is the foundation, not the obstacle.

Why Specialized Coaching Matters

Living with a chronic illness is a full-time job in itself. Adding a business or a career on top of that is a monumental feat. Sometimes, you need more than just a blog post; you need a supportive peer who understands the nuances of spoon management.

As a wellness coach, I don't give you a rigid plan and tell you to "hustle harder." Instead, we work together to:

  • Identify your unique energy patterns.
  • Create a "Habit Menu" tailored to your Traffic Light levels.
  • Build systems that keep your business running without sacrificing your health.
  • Navigate the emotional rollercoaster of living with fluctuating capacity.

This is personalized wellness coaching designed specifically for those of us who don't fit the "standard" wellness mold. We focus on realistic, adaptable strategies that prioritize you.

You Are Enough, Exactly As You Are

The biggest hurdle to building habits isn't your lack of willpower, it's the belief that you have to be "healthy" to be "well."

Wellness is not a destination where you finally have perfect energy and a perfectly functioning body. Wellness is the practice of being kind to yourself right now, in the middle of the mess, the pain, and the fatigue.

Whether you’re crushing a Green Day or just surviving a Red Day from under the duvet, you are doing incredible work. Your habits should serve you, not the other way around.

If you're ready to explore a more compassionate approach to your health and business, I'd love to chat. You can reach out to me here for a discovery call, or sign up for our quarterly updates for more gentle tips delivered straight to your inbox.

Remember: tiny steps still move you forward.
