Hello there. I’m so glad you’ve found your way here. If you’ve ever felt like the world of “wellness” wasn’t built for you, I want you to take a deep breath and know that you are exactly where you need to be.
This isn’t your typical guide to productivity or health. There are no 5:00 AM wake-up calls here, no “no-days-off” manifestos, and certainly no pressure to push through the pain. This is the first look at my upcoming ebook, The Gentle Guide to Accessible Habit Building, and I wanted to share the beginning of this journey with you.
Introduction: Unlearning the Hustle
Let’s be honest for a second: most habit-building advice is exhausting.
We are constantly told that consistency is the only way to succeed. We’re told that if we just “want it enough,” we’ll find the energy to hit the gym, meal prep for the week, and meditate for thirty minutes every morning. But for those of us living with chronic illness, disabilities, or energy levels that change like the weather, that advice feels less like a roadmap and more like a barrier.
When you’re managing a flare-up or navigating a day where your brain feels like it’s wrapped in cotton wool, the traditional "hustle" isn’t just difficult, it’s impossible. And more than that, it’s often harmful.

For a long time, I tried to force my body to fit into those rigid systems. I felt like a failure every time I couldn't keep up. But then I realized something life-changing: Habits should fit your life, not the other way around.
Wellness isn’t a destination you reach by running as fast as you can. It’s a way of moving through the world that respects your current capacity. It’s about finding small, gentle ways to support yourself that actually feel good. This guide is about unlearning the idea that you have to be "high-performance" to be healthy. It’s about building a life that is sustainable, compassionate, and accessible for every body and mind.
Chapter 1: Energy Budgeting & The Traffic Light System
Before we even talk about specific habits, we have to talk about our "fuel."
In the traditional wellness world, people act like energy is an infinite resource, that if you just drink enough coffee or have enough "grit," you can do anything. But we know better. For us, energy is a precious, finite budget.
Understanding Your Energy Budget
Think of your energy like a bank account. Every single thing you do, from brushing your teeth and answering an email to having a difficult conversation, costs a certain amount of "currency."
Some days, you wake up with a healthy balance. Other days, you wake up in the "overdraft" before you’ve even stepped out of bed. If you spend more than you have, you don’t just get tired; you crash. You might experience a flare-up, intense brain fog, or physical exhaustion that takes days or weeks to recover from.
Building habits without understanding your budget is like trying to buy a house without checking your bank account. You might manage it for a day or two, but eventually, the math won't add up. To make wellness sustainable, we have to learn how to check our balance first.

The Traffic Light System
One of the most effective ways to manage this budget is what I call the Traffic Light System. This is a tool designed to help you check in with yourself without judgment. It’s a way to categorize your capacity so you know exactly which version of a habit you can handle today.
Instead of asking, "Did I do my habit?" we ask, "What color am I today?"

🟢 Green: Standard/High Capacity
A "Green Light" day doesn’t necessarily mean you feel like a superhero. It just means you feel "normal" for you. Your symptoms are manageable, your mind feels relatively clear, and you have enough energy to tackle your standard routine.
- The Habit Goal: On these days, you can do your full version of a habit (e.g., a 15-minute gentle stretch or cooking a simple, fresh meal).
🟡 Yellow: Moderate/Need to Pace
A "Yellow Light" day is a warning sign. Maybe you didn't sleep well, or you’ve had a busy few days and you can feel the fatigue creeping in. You can still function, but you need to be careful. If you push too hard today, you’ll end up in the Red tomorrow.
- The Habit Goal: On these days, we scale back. We do the "lite" version of the habit (e.g., stretching for 2 minutes while the kettle boils or putting together a "snack plate" instead of cooking).
🔴 Red: Low Capacity/Rest is Priority
A "Red Light" day is a full stop. This is a flare-up day, a high-pain day, or a day of profound exhaustion. Your only job on a Red day is to survive and rest.
- The Habit Goal: On these days, the "habit" is often just resting. The most "wellness-focused" thing you can do is listen to your body and stop. Your habit might be "staying hydrated" or simply "resting without guilt."
Identifying Your Light Without Judgment
The most important part of this system is the without judgment bit.
In our personalized wellness coaching sessions, I often see people get angry at themselves for having a Red day. They feel like they’ve "failed" their streak. But a Red day isn't a failure, it's a biological reality.
When you identify your light, try to do it as if you’re a scientist observing weather patterns. "Oh, look, it’s raining today. I should probably bring an umbrella." You wouldn't yell at the clouds for raining, so don't yell at your body for needing rest.
By using this system, you ensure that you are always doing something that supports you, even if that "something" is resting. It keeps the momentum going without the burnout. It makes wellness truly accessible.
Moving Forward Gently
This is just the beginning of the journey. In the full ebook, we’ll dive deeper into how to "scale" your habits for each light and how to rebuild trust with your body after years of the hustle culture.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need someone to help you navigate your own Energy Budget, I’m here for you. Wellness shouldn't be a solo struggle.
Traffic Light Habit Tracker Printable
To make this chapter easier to use in real life, I’ve created a simple one-page Traffic Light Habit Tracker printable. It’s designed to help you check in gently, without turning your habits into another pressure-filled to-do list.
You can use it as a daily or weekly support page. The idea is simple:
- At the top of the page: write the habit you’re working on in a gentle, realistic way.
- Green column: note what the full version of that habit looks like on a higher-capacity day.
- Yellow column: write the smaller, paced version you can do when your energy is mixed.
- Red column: write the lowest-pressure version, or your rest-based version, for flare days or very low-capacity days.
- Check-in space: add a small box or line for "What colour am I today?" so you can respond to your body instead of pushing past it.
- Notes section: include a little space for patterns, reminders, or compassionate reflections like "Rest counted today."
A very simple template might look like this:
Traffic Light Habit Tracker
- Habit: __________________________
- This week I want support with: __________________________
| Light | What this habit looks like today |
|---|---|
| 🟢 Green | __________________________________ |
| 🟡 Yellow | __________________________________ |
| 🔴 Red | __________________________________ |
- Today’s light: ☐ Green ☐ Yellow ☐ Red
- What I chose today: __________________________
- Notes / what helped: __________________________
If you print it out, I recommend keeping it somewhere visible and easy to reach. If printing isn’t accessible or practical, you can also copy the format into a notebook, phone notes app, or planner. The goal is flexibility, not perfection. That’s very much at the heart of my work and the wider #Ablepreneurs spirit too: building support that fits real life.

Next Steps
If this approach feels like a relief, the next gentle step might be getting support to actually put it into practice.
My 6-week course is the implementation phase of this work. It’s where we take ideas like energy budgeting, traffic light habits, and flexible routines, and turn them into something that feels usable in your real, everyday life. We go slowly, we adapt as needed, and we build around your capacity, not against it.
So if reading this has helped you think, "Yes, this is what I need, but I’d love help applying it," that’s exactly where the course can help. It’s not about doing more. It’s about finding a steadier, more supported way forward, for every body and mind.
